Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) for Type 2DM
Summary
Summary of multiple studies examining CGM among adults with type 2 diabetes receiving noninsulin or basal insulin therapy across clinical and real-world settings.

Background
Many adults with type 2 diabetes face barriers to accessing CGM, particularly those without insurance coverage. The Dexcom Community Glucose Monitoring Project evaluated the impact of providing CGM at no cost to uninsured adults with type 2 diabetes in a primary care setting over six months.
Main outcomes
- CGM use was associated with improved glycemic outcomes, including increased Time in Range, lower average glucose levels, and greater A1C reductions compared with traditional glucose monitoring.
- A large real-world analysis found that transitioning from blood glucose monitoring to CGM was associated with reductions in diabetes-related hospitalizations and emergency room visits across treatment regimens.
- Improvements in A1C were observed as early as three months after CGM initiation and were sustained over time.
What this means for your practice
- Consider CGM as a tool to support glycemic management across a broad range of people with type 2 diabetes, including those on non-insulin and insulin therapies.
- CGM data can help identify glucose patterns and support treatment discussions aimed at improving glycemic outcomes.
- Ongoing CGM use may help support sustained improvements in glucose control and potentially reduce acute diabetes-related healthcare utilization.
