Topics: Accuracy, Safety, Ease of Use
Research Spotlight: “Accuracy and Safety of Dexcom G7 Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Adults with Diabetes” Garg SK, et al. Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics. 2022 Jun;24(6):373-380.
Background: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems have significantly advanced diabetes management by providing real-time glucose readings. The Dexcom G7 is the latest generation of CGM, designed to improve upon the performance and usability of its predecessor, the G6. This study evaluates the accuracy and safety of the Dexcom G7 CGM in adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Key question: Is the Dexcom G7 accurate and safe when used by adults with diabetes over a 10.5-day period?
Main outcomes of the study:
- Accuracy: The G7 CGM demonstrated high accuracy with an overall mean absolute relative difference (MARD) of 8.2% for sensors placed on the arm and 9.1% for sensors placed on the abdomen.
- %15/15 agreement rates: 89.6% for arm-placed sensors and 85.5% for abdomen-placed sensors.
- %20/20 agreement rates: 95.3% for arm-placed sensors and 93.2% for abdomen-placed sensors.
- %30/30 agreement rates: 98.8% for arm-placed sensors and 98.1% for abdomen-placed sensors.
- Safety: No serious adverse events were reported. Mild to moderate device-related adverse events included erythema, skin tearing, and discomfort during sensor removal.
- User Experience: 75.8% of participants had prior CGM experience, and 68.1% found the G7 easier to insert than their current device.
Key takeaways for healthcare providers:
- The Dexcom G7 CGM provides accurate glucose readings with an overall MARD of 8.2%, on the arm with no calibrations, making it reliable for diabetes management.
- The G7’s smaller size, integrated sensor/transmitter, and simplified insertion process may enhance user experience and adherence.
- The G7’s accuracy across different glucose ranges and rates of change supports its use in various clinical scenarios, including during rapid glucose fluctuations.
