Background

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can impact both maternal and neonatal outcomes during pregnancy. Recent studies evaluated the use of Dexcom CGM in women with GDM to better understand its effect on glucose management, pregnancy outcomes, and patient experience.

Main outcomes

  • In the Steady Sugar Trial, CGM use was associated with fewer unscheduled C-sections, fewer preterm deliveries, lower rates of large-for-gestational-age infants, and fewer NICU admissions compared with standard monitoring.
  • CGM use enabled more timely treatment adjustments and was associated with improved maternal and neonatal outcomes.
  • A separate study found high satisfaction with Dexcom CGM among women with GDM, with participants reporting that CGM helped them better understand glucose patterns and support diabetes management decisions.

What this means for your practice

  1. Consider CGM as a tool to support glucose management and treatment decisions for women with gestational diabetes.
  2. CGM may provide valuable insights throughout pregnancy by helping identify glucose patterns that are not always captured with traditional monitoring approaches.
  3. Strong patient satisfaction highlights CGM's potential to support engagement and confidence in diabetes management during pregnancy.
