The Dexcom Community Glucose Monitoring Project
Summary
A community-based project evaluating CGM use in adults with type 2 diabetes and its impact on A1C and glycemic control over six months.

Background
Many adults with type 2 diabetes face barriers to accessing CGM, particularly those without insurance coverage. The Dexcom Community Glucose Monitoring Project evaluated the impact of providing CGM at no cost to uninsured adults with type 2 diabetes in a primary care setting over six months.
Main outcomes
- Participants experienced substantial improvements in glycemic control, with mean A1C decreasing from 9.4% at baseline to 7.1% at 6 months.
- More than half of participants achieved an A1C below 7%, and 83% achieved an A1C below 8% after CGM use.
- Time in Range increased by 5.5% (+1.32 hours/day), while time spent above range decreased, demonstrating improved glucose management over the study period.
What this means for your practice
Greater CGM use was associated with greater A1C reduction, with the most durable improvements observed in people using CGM for more than 270 days.
- CGM can support meaningful improvements in glycemic outcomes for adults with type 2 diabetes, even with minimal training and no changes to medication protocols.
- Real-time glucose data may help identify opportunities for more informed treatment discussions and timely care adjustments.
- Expanding access to CGM may help more patients reach recommended glycemic targets and improve overall diabetes management.
